How to Connect Firebase MCP

Setup Guide

This guide is written for Claude Code.

Connecting to MCP (Model Context Protocol) might sound intimidating, but it's simple. The Firebase MCP server accesses Firebase using your Firebase CLI login and project permissions, so log in with the Firebase CLI first.

Add It with a Command

This is the method in the Firebase docs. Run it from your app folder.

Bash
claude mcp add firebase npx -- -y firebase-tools@latest mcp

Firebase also offers a Claude Code plugin:

Bash
claude plugin marketplace add firebase/firebase-tools
claude plugin install firebase@firebase

Add It with a Config File

You can also put it directly in .mcp.json at your project root. It differs slightly by OS.

MacOS

JSON
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "firebase": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "firebase-tools@latest", "mcp"]
    }
  }
}

On macOS, using npx directly as the command worked.

Windows

JSON
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "firebase": {
      "command": "cmd",
      "args": ["/c", "npx", "-y", "firebase-tools@latest", "mcp"]
    }
  }
}

On Windows, calling npx directly didn't work, so I had to wrap it with cmd and the /c flag.

How to Verify the Connection

  1. Enter Claude Code by typing claude in your terminal.
  2. Use the /mcp command to view the list of connected MCP servers. From your shell, claude mcp list also works.

If the connection isn't there, use the /doctor command to diagnose the issue or try reconnecting.
